What Is Eating Disorder Therapy?

Eating Disorder Therapy is a specialized form of counseling designed to support individuals struggling with unhealthy relationships with food, body image, and self-esteem. Eating disorders such as Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia Nervosa, and other disordered eating patterns can deeply affect both mental and physical well-being. At The Snow Psychology Group, our therapists focus on addressing the underlying emotional, psychological, and behavioral factors contributing to these conditions.

Eating disorders are complex and often deeply ingrained, affecting both mental and physical health. Without intervention, they can lead to severe medical complications, emotional distress, social isolation, and a diminished quality of life. Therapy can help to break the cycle of disordered eating, enabling individuals to regain control, build healthier coping mechanisms, and develop a positive relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are conditions exhibited by frequent, significant disturbances in eating behaviors, as well as experiencing related distressing thoughts and emotions. They can be very serious and affect physical, psychological, and social functioning. Types of eating disorders treated by the therapists at The Snow Psychology Group include binge eating disorder, bulimia, and restricted eating. Problematic eating can affect people of all genders, ages, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Eating disturbances are often a complex combination of biological, psychological, emotional, and cultural conditions that affect a possible genetic vulnerability.

Binge Eating Disorder

This condition involves recurrent episodes of overeating large amounts of food in a discrete period of time–more than most people would consume in the same duration. Other related behaviors include eating very rapidly and beyond the feeling of being full, eating when not hungry, and eating alone. This behavior is often accompanied by feelings of being out of control, guilt, and shame.  Other characteristics can include:

  • Creating daily plans to make time for binge sessions
  • Becoming isolated and secretive, and withdrawing from friends and favorite activities
  • Showing significant concern about body weight and shape
  • Experiencing periods of low self-esteem

Bulimia

The main difference between Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia is that Bulimia includes recurrent, inappropriate neutralizing or compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain. This may include self-induced vomiting, overuse of laxatives, diuretics or other medications, fasting, and/or excessive exercise.

Restricted Eating Problems

Symptoms of restricted eating may include anxiety or fear when eating due to concerns about certain foods, selective eating caused by a lack of interest in food, sensory issues such as strong reactions to taste, texture, and the smell of foods, and a fear of consuming or digesting foods due to physical problems. This condition is often related to issues such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, weight loss, health problems, body image concerns, and panic due to negative food experiences.

At The Snow Psychology Group, our experienced licensed therapists will assist you in recognizing your specific symptoms and patterns related to eating. We typically begin with identifying problem behaviors, feelings, and thoughts, to modify those areas step by step.  You may be experiencing other related symptoms, such as anxiety or sadness, which will also be addressed during treatment.

Who We Treat?

Our practice is ideal for those seeking Eating Disorder treatment to learn techniques to identify triggers and how to manage symptoms so you will have tools to use, both now and in the future, to live a healthier life.  We treat patients over age 25 who are experiencing Eating Disorders. Please note that our eating disorder therapists do not treat adolescents or young adults under 25 years old and we will be happy to provide referrals for younger patients.  Our practice is not appropriate for those who have Anorexia Nervosa and we can make referral suggestions for treatment centers that address that issue.

Our Therapeutic Approach

At The Snow Psychology Group, our therapists are experienced and licensed professionals who are dedicated to offering compassionate, evidence-based care. We use a holistic approach that considers not only the symptoms of the disorder but also the broader emotional and psychological context.

Therapeutic Techniques We Use:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): We help patients identify and challenge negative thought patterns around food, weight, and self-image, replacing them with healthier, more constructive thoughts and behaviors.

  • Mindfulness: We also teach mindfulness skills, stress reduction, and distress tolerance to help people better manage the emotional triggers that often drive disordered eating behaviors.
  • Nutritional Counseling: In collaboration with dietitians, we help clients develop balanced, sustainable eating patterns that support their recovery.
  • Trauma-Informed Care: Eating disorders are frequently tied to past trauma. We ensure that our therapy environment is safe and respectful and provide evidence-based trauma treatment as needed.

Each of these approaches is tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual. Our therapists work closely with patients to build trust, helping them feel supported and empowered throughout their recovery journey.
